POSITION: TEACHER
REPORTS TO: SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Teacher is a guide who helps direct the children’s activities: physically, spiritually, emotionally, and academically in a prepared Montessori environment. Challenging each child to reach his/her fullest potential in these developmental areas, according with Montessori philosophy and Kaban Montessori School’s policies and procedures.
The Teacher is responsible for the record keeping and planning for the children and preparing an environment in which the furnishings and materials are complete and correspond to the needs of the group.
This position also focuses on assisting the School Administrator in the planning and implementation of several programs and meetings throughout the year.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES
1. Maintenance of the classroom including providing an orderly environment by maintaining its materials and its cleanliness. It is encouraged to include the children in this process.
2. Prepare and submit a written inventory of initial classroom material at commencement of employment to the School Administrator and ensure maintenance of a fully equipped classroom at all times.
3. Maintain a fully stocked inventory of cotton balls, paper, pencils, glue, paint and all other classroom material that requires daily refills. Ensure that inventory is well stocked by ordering all necessary items in advance of depletion.
4. Maintain and monitor current classroom attendance records, daily classroom journal (per child) and presentation record keeping (per child) in order to facilitate parent/teacher interviews. Such academic records shall be submitted to the School Administrator for review and approval two weeks prior to such interviews.
5. Assist with children’s lunch and snacks. Ensure they follow proper etiquette as per KABAN’s rules at the table (setting the table, eating with utensils, remaining seated while eating and clean up after eating). Additionally, be aware of each child’s allergies and ensure appropriate food is served accordingly.
6. Water plants and flowers in the classroom. It is encouraged to include the children in this process.
7. Assist children with dressing and undressing. Ensure children place their personal belongings in their appropriate cubbies.
8. Change children’s diapers as needed and assist with children’s potty training as required.
9. Assist with the supervision of the children while in the playground area.
10. Assist the School Administrator in developing and implementing adult orientation courses and seminars.
11. Assist in the planning and implementing of Open Houses throughout the year (maximum of 6 per year).
12. Conduct and assist with class meetings for parents as appropriate or as directed by the School Administrator.
13. Prepare and present an annual classroom program and develop twelve separate monthly themes and submit to the School Administrator for review and approval.
14. Plan, prepare and coordinate Children’s Annual Events including the Winter Holiday Concert and the Summer Lunch Performance.
15. Prepare and plan for three Parent-Teacher interviews per year to discuss the physical, emotional and intellectual development of each child with their parents.
16. Maintain the School Administrator informed, at all times, of any concerns regarding any child and document accordingly.
17. Train and supervise children in the execution of fire drills. The routine is to be clearly established and the building exited with dispatch and order. (Please refer to the FirePolicy and Procedures)
18. Perform any related duties or carry out special projects, which may be assigned by the School Administrator, from time to time.

REQUIREMENTS
Education: Post secondary education is required: Recognised Montessori Diploma and/or Early Childhood Education Diploma.
Experience: Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills are a necessity. Annual certification in First aid and CPR Knowledge, including recognizing potential indicators and legal responsibilities associated with child abuse.

ANTICIPATED HOURS OF WORK
9 hour work shift with 1 hour lunch

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS
This position deals with confidential material on a regular basis. Tact and confidentiality are required. It is crucial to protect the privacy and working atmosphere of the children, fellow employees and parents at all times. All communication goes through the Administrator’s office before any concerns of an academic or behaviour nature are addressed with the parents. Discretion shall be used at all times when communicating with parents regarding their children. It is strongly advised to communicate discreetly and with respect in order to protect the child’s pride and privacy. Occasional overtime may be required from time to time as school functions, such as staff meetings, parent education meetings, open houses, etc, are held after regular school hours. Report any accidents and illnesses immediately to the School Administrator and prepare a written report stating date, time, nature of accident and action taken. EMPLOYEE CONDUCT
Model appropriate behaviour at all times. It is essential to use precise and positive language and to be aware of one’s own movements, tone and volume, as one’s own behaviour will alter the children’s. Understand and exhibit a professional manner at all times. Concerns should be addressed in a diplomatic, mature, unemotional, objective fashion, facilitating open dialogue that would allow for the best solution for the child. It is very important to start the day right. Greet each child and exchange few words about what he/she is going to work with. As the Pre-School Teacher, it is essential to focus attention on the whole class by overseeing all areas. If a child is causing a disturbance in the class, establish eye contact. If this does not work, remove him/her from the trouble area. It is strongly advised to approach the child rather than calling his/her name across the classroom. Always set the proper example for the children on the level of noise in the classroom.
